Students asks about Soloing and Keys
ByA student on YouTube asked me recently:
“just woundering when someone says like there playing in the key of A does that mean there soloing in A also and how does the chord switching go like what chords can you play with like A that sound good and so on for other chords ?”
My answer was: “key of A means A major which has A B C# D E F# G# A which means you will usually solo with those notes. Also the chords in key of A are built off of those notes.
A major chord is A C# E (every other note from scale above)
B minor chord is B D F#
etc
a song is made up of chord progressions which is common combinations of chords like A D E is a very common progression (called I IV V since they’re the first, fourth and fifth chord in the key).
when you solo over the progression the most melodic way to do it is to try and emphasize the notes from the current chord that is playing.”
